Travel the world, meet interesting people, drill for oil

If you are in college, or are heading off to college and have no idea what you want to do but have an aptitude for math and science, I’d highly recommend that you get an engineering degree and pursue a career in the oil & gas industry. I mean, really, what else are you going to major in, finance? Anyways, there are plenty of opportunities in the oil & gas industry, which is currently facing a manpower shortage that will be exacerbated when the Baby Boomers start to retire (if they actually retire, that is. I’m not convinced they ever will).

There’s Gold in an Oil Degree:

Even with the recent drop in oil prices, newly-minted grads in the field are making a killing. At Texas Tech University, for instance, the starting pay for graduates with bachelor’s degrees in petroleum engineering is around $105,000 – $80,000 in salary plus a guaranteed bonus of $20,000 to $30,000, according to Lloyd Heinze, chairman of the school’s petroleum engineering department.

Yeah, not bad. On top of that, you might end up working somewhere cool, like Kazakhstan.

Could be fun to live on one of these for awhile, no?
