This blog is officially carbon neutral

by in Uncategorized

Yeah, that’s right. This bloated website, which is like an SUV on the information superhighway due to my habit of uploading ungodly amounts of images, is officially “carbon neutral.”

Apparently, Dreamhost, the wonderful SoCal based company that hosts this website, is now purchasing offsets for the 2725 tons of CO2 they emit every year.

This means that I can drive the XTerra a bit more, knowing that the carbon produced by lindsayfincher.com is being offset by the good techs over at Dreamhost. Thanks, guys.

I do not agree with you. The possibility to host at a company which offers “neutralization” of carbon dioxide, does not imply that you ‘may’ offset more of it.
Imagine, that very rich companies, people would buy as much certificates as they could, we will never ever be able to coup with their offsets being enabled then.
The simple difference is, that money in shares and interests can grow infintivly, but nature not, only if its cancer.
I would accept this reglement only for a very limited time, to give – in your case dreamhost – the chance to move to a true “green datacenter” which is supplied by renewable energy.
When everybody “buys” one off, the essential technological and behavioural changes, e.g. being cautious with every kilowatt, wont happen.
ecologee.net informs you, as a customer and ISP about the more hard, but in our view more realistic way to convert to a green web service.
