North Korea: Driving through the streets of Pyongyang, continued…

Today I uploaded more footage taken while driving through Pyongyang.

The first video includes footage of Kim Il-Sung Square, the Ryugyong Hotel, Pyongyang Traffic Girls, and the Grand People’s Study House.

This second video was taken while driving through Pyongyang in the evening. There is not much to see, due to the lack of electricity, and therefore lighting, in Pyongyang.

POTD: Kim Il-sung at the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum

This is part of the giant mural that is displayed at the entrance to the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum in Pyongyang. At the center is Kim Il-sung, who is known in North Korea as the saviour of the nation who led the DPRK to victory in the Korean War. That, of course, couldn’t be further from the truth.

POTD: The Pyongyang roller coaster o’ fun (or death)

This is the roller coaster at the Mangyongdae Fun Fair in Pyongyang, North Korea. It was definitely the scariest roller coaster I have ever been on, considering the safety restraints didn’t work and there were thick layers of rust on the tracks. But I survived, and even managed to film the ride while holding on for dear life (and I’m pretty sure camera insurance wouldn’t have covered a device carelessly ejected out of that roller coaster).

mass games

These “human mosaics” at the Arirang Festival Mass Games are composed of 20,000 North Korean schoolchildren sitting at one end of the stadium, each one of them holding a flip-book that contains 170 different colored panels. An instructor notifies them when to flip pages in the book, thus changing the background scene.

This is a statue of a worker, peasant, and intellectual in front of the Tower of Juche Idea in Pyongyang, North Korea. I found this statue to be quite similar to Vera Mukhina’s “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman” statue in Moscow.
