vdnkh_ostankino_tv_tower_lg

The Ostankino TV Tower. At 540m high, this is the tallest freestanding structure in Europe. Built in 1967, this replaced the Shukov TV tower located across the street from my dorm. This is a popular site for base jumping (people strap on parachutes and jump off). In October 1993, this was the site of the "Battle of Ostankino", when a mob of 4000 parliamentary supporters attempted to capture the TV tower from pro-Yeltsin forces.
