Vladimir Lenin, founder of the Soviet Union, lays embalmed in his tomb in Moscow's Red Square Wednesday April 16, 1997 six days before his 127th April 22 birthday. After Lenin's mausoleum was closed for six weeks recently for the body's annual makeover, scientists said the mummified body can be kept in good condition for centuries, as long as regular treatment continues. Meanwhile, politicans have sparred over whether the proletarian leader should receive a proper burial. The controversy, which originally flared during the decline of the communist regime, was reopened by President Boris Yeltsin in March when he suggested that Lenin's remains should be buried in St. Petersburg alongside his mother.
