Strongbow Cider in DC: CommonWealth Gastropub

Ah yes, of course. I leave Columbia Heights and a “British” pub that sells Strongbow on draft opens a few blocks from my former house. Nevertheless, still happy as hell to be out of that neighborhood.

But if you do live there and enjoy Strongbow you can order it by the US or UK pint at CommonWealth. I went there over Inauguration weekend and had lunch with my mom, Cheryl, and Annie. The food was good, but much like The Heights, is pretty overpriced. Sixteen bucks for fish and effin’ chips? Wow.

Also, a reader informed me that you can now drink Strongbow at Ben’s Next Door, the new restaurant started by the family behind Ben’s Chili Bowl. Strongbow + Ben’s chili half smoke = heaven?

    Strongbow Cider in DC: D’Vines

First, I should put up a bit of a disclaimer in regards to Strongbow. A reader of this blog (hi John!) recently e-mailed me to share his experience with Strongbow on a recent trip to London:

Never having had a Strongbow, at our first pub in Chelsea I saw the tap and ordered one. Telling my two friends I knew a certain Lindsay Fincher who had spent some time in London and held Strongbow in high esteem, my partners also ordered the same upon my (and your) recommendations.

Given the name, I thought it would be a “strong” English pale ale. To my/our surprise, it was a weak cider and brut champagne tasting disappointment. ‘Strongbow’ indeed! Gack!!

As I told John, I can definitely see why a lot of people don’t like Strongbow, due to its intense, apple-juiceish taste. In fact, most of my guy friends in London couldn’t stand it, whereas us girls would down numerous pints of it, so it was often labeled a “girl’s drink”. So if you are looking for a good ale or lager, definitely don’t order a Strongbow. I will say, though, that it goes quite well with a package of salt and vinegar crisps, and in fact this was often my typical dinner when I lived in London (and if you’ve ever been subjected to British dorm food, you would also opt for cider and crisps).

John, my apologies for subjecting you and your friends to Strongbow. If you are ever in DC, I will gladly buy you a real pint of beer!
That being said, if you are a DC resident who does like Strongbow, you can find 500mL cans of it at D’Vines in Columbia Heights (3103 14th St NW). (Of course, AFTER I move out of Columbia Heights a store that sells Strongbow opens up! Ah, such is life.)

    Strongbow Cider in DC: Brickskeller

As part of my continuing service to fellow Strongbow aficionados currently residing in the Washington, D.C. area, I am posting a blog entry every time I come across this wonderful beverage in a D.C. establishment.

The latest place to carry Strongbow is Brickskeller, the venerable D.C. bar that holds the Guinness World Record for most available beers. I don’t recall seeing Strongbow on the beer menu when I was there a few months ago (granted I usually go for Baltika #3), but I had one there last night (500 mL can).

Brickskeller can definitely be a hit or miss place. The service might be ridiculously slow (20+ minutes to find a beer) and they’ll be out of your first 27 selections on one night, but on other nights (like last night) the service will be excellent and you’ll get your beer in a few minutes. One of the best things about the Brickskeller is the atmosphere. It’s a really relaxed place and no trendy dressing up BS required. Also, the music selection is awesome. If you love beer and you’ve never been to Brickskeller before, I’d highly recommend it. It’s also the first bar I went to on my 21st birthday, so I have a lot of good memories from that establishment. I do wish they’d bring back the Croatian Karlovacko, though.

Brickskeller is located at 1523 22nd St NW. Nearest metro is DuPont Circle.
