I hereby nominate George Clooney for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
You know it’s a slow news day when the top CNN story on your Google homepage is “Clooney campaigns to raise Darfur awareness.” Nevertheless, I click it for the mere fact that it is about George Clooney, the “Sexiest Man Alive.”
Apparently Clooney has been traveling to China and Egypt and urging government officials there to do something about the bloodshed in Darfur. This is an issue he obviously cares deeply about, so why not give him the top (and soon to be vacant) U.S. position at the U.N.? I mean, damn, the guy’s only 45 and he’s already saved the world from nuclear annihilation, helped a bunch of Iraqi refugees escape the clutches of Saddam Hussein, and basically told that bully Joe McCarthy, “FU.” Granted, he stole all that money from Terry Benedict (that guy was a jerk anyways) and couldn’t prevent the U.S. government from assassinating Prince Nasir Al-Subaai, but we all have our “off” days. He looks ridiculously good in a suit, and contemporary American politics isn’t really about substance or intelligence, so we might as well populate the U.N. with some delicious eye candy rather than nominate another John Bolton bore fest. Dubya, let’s make this happen.

I actually agree with you about Clooney. I sometimes seem a bit polarized on my site, but in the end I’m still the laid back Californian who sees both sides of the spectrum.
I may not agree with a lot of what George C. believes in, but sending him to the UN would be a great way to break the ineffective nightmare that organization has become. Clooney would have a lot of ’star clout’ that might actually get enough media attention to drag countries into Darfur, or other regions, whereas before they’ve almost always turned away.
The UN had so much potention years ago. I say we do anything we can to change it around and make it something important again.

Cap – Bono as UK rep? Brilliant idea! Usually I just roll my eyes when celebs get into politics (left or right), but if Bono, Clooney, Jolie/Pitt, et al can maybe get a few people interested in an issue like Darfur or AIDS in Africa, and raise some $ then I’m all for it. I pretty much lost all faith in the UN after the genocide in Rwanda. It’s a shame, because as you said, the organization does have a lot of potential.

Best book I’ve read on the UN was by William Shawcross, “Deliver Us from Evil: Peacekeepers, Warlords and a World of Endless Conflict” After reading this, I too lost all faith in the UN. Shawcross is a really good guy too. Usually nails both sides when they’re wrong, and he looks out for the little guys.
